Summer Camps last day
How was the last day of Summer Camp? Dave and I wish we could have been there.
I've already been thinking of ideas for next year. Are we going to continue to use this Blog throughout the year? Maybe Brian could set up a "Brainstorming Blog", where we could just blog our ideas as we think of them. I'm Blog Crazy now....all I wanna do is blog (hahaha).
Pastor Bob, as soon as I get Chuck's (Bayview Fire Department) last name I will post it, along with the address to send a thank you.
Hope everyone had a fabulous week!

Slip N' Slide Rental
Dave and I passed the Church on the way home from work and noticed the Slip N' Slide still hadn't been picked up by the rental company (Grand Rental Station / 484-9200). Did they call to say they weren't picking it up or did someone call them and request an extra day?
Just want to make sure we aren't charged for something we didn't request.

Hi Folks,
Below is a summary of the agenda prepared by the Cool Events Team. I've included some of the unanswered questions to remind us of some of the work still to be completed. I will update this post periodically as the questions are answered so look back periodically at this thread as it will change. Thanks so much for all your help thus far and thanks in advance for the hard work still ahead.
Brian...

Brian...
Monday - Stacey - 10:00 to 10:50 - Bayview Fire Company
- Did we include bathing suit reminder? The Fire Company has assured us the kids will get wet :-)
- We need a bullhorn for this and several other days.
- Bullhorn
- Still waiting on final okay for Fly By
Wednesday - Lou and Bob - 10:00 to 10:50 - Galloway Police Department
- Bullhorn
- Stacey will be posting details by Tuesday night
- Need commitment on counselors breaking down slide Thursday evening, after they've had a chance to use it themselves
- Amy's picking up water balloons and two slip and slides with some non-toxic soap and Stacey and I are providing a few water toys to occupy the kids waiting in line for the large water slide; certainly any other water toys are welcomed
- We need a few counselors to fill water balloons Thursday morning before the kids arrive
- We'd like to have a second showing of the DVD while parents arrive to pick up their kids; it would be good if the parents knew of this in advance
- We'll not be making DVD's but could have a shorter video streamed online. To that end, Lou will be providing the digital images such that Beacon EFC staff can put together a short video that can be streamed. This can be used as promotional material for next year provided we use pictures from our members and get their parents permission and pay attention to copyright issues with the music

Can you Help us Brainstorm DVD Copying?
I've copied an email exchange between Lou and I below regarding some challenges in trying to figure out how to copy the DVD's for the children. Read from the bottom up and please let us know if you have any thoughts on the subject...
Hi Lou,
That’s a shame. Perhaps we can put the video on the web for folks to download? What kind of file size do you expect the product to be?

Hi Brian, I also have bad news, Staples and Fed EX Kinkos do not do DVD copies. Let me know if you think of anything else. Please pass this on to the others.

Update
Joe Blazo, from the Bayview Fire Department left a message and said that one of his Lieutenants is going to contact me and that Monday, July 21st shouldn't be a problem for them.
I left another message for Sgt. Frank Weir in reference to Wednesdays event (fingerprinting and/or K-9s).
I'll give both of these gentlemen until 3pm to get back to me and then I'll start calling again.
Have a great day!

Cool Events Team Needs
Hi Kelly,
I hope you don't mind me sending the following request as a blog comment. Pastor Bob wants to encourage the use of blogs, as you know, and I think you and I are the most comfortable with the technology. Thus, my request via blog!
The Cool Events Team has a couple of requests as we move forward. We'd like to ensure that parents send their children in with towels, super-soakers and sunscreen on Thursday when we will have a water slide for the children. The super-soakers are to keep the kids occupied while waiting in line for the slide. Lou will also be assisting in this effort by periodically gathering the children in groups of 50 for photos while they are waiting for the slide. We're assuming here you are sending a letter to parents and would like these three requests included in that letter.
We also wanted to touch base with you with regard to some of the timing. We know for sure the Coast Guard fly-by will be at 1:30 on Tuesday so we'd like the events team to have the 1:00 to 2:00 time slot if possible. Also we thought it might be good to let the children have a couple of hours Thursday so they can enjoy the water slide a little longer, say 10:00 to Noon.
Finally, we were thinking we could leave the water slide up for the camp volunteers the evening of Thursday. We've rented the slide from 9am on Thursday to 9am on Friday. We were hoping that, after the volunteers had their share of fun Thursday evening, they might be willing to deflate the slide, fold it up somehow, and put it inside the church for safekeeping. If this is possible it might be helpful to have one or two of them watch the slide being put together on Thursday morning.
Thanks so much for allowing me to blog this. I know that we have special role to play in spreading the word of Christ through this medium.

This is great!
Hey everyone! This blog is great! I am totally blessed that you set something like this up, Brian. What a cool way to communicate and brainstorm :)
I love the ideas of the fly-by and the water activities. Our lesson for Day 4 is called "Water Wonder" (It's about Jesus walking on water) --so maybe we could turn Thursday into Water Wonder Day, and have all kinds of water activities that day. Or we could go with Water Wednesday if we wanted to make the mid-week point really exciting
Did you all get postcards for the kick-off meeting next Wednesday, July 2nd, at 7 p.m. in the Genesis Room? Hopefully you all can make it...I am excited to worship, pray, & brainstorm with all of you! Also, hopefully you guys heard that we recently decided to open the camp up to kids who are entering 1st grade in the fall :)
Have a blessed day everyone! Thanks so much for your hearts for the kids and the Lord and Day Camp...I'm looking forward to what God has in store for the week!
Lots of Love in Him,
Kelly

Coast Guard Fly-By - 7/22 @ 1:30pm
Hi Folks!
One of our church members, Liuetenant Bruce Kimmell of the United States Coast Guard, has assisted with securing a fly-by on the 22nd of July at 1:30 pm. Pastor Bob and I thought it might be good to have something related to the fly-by on the ground to complete this activity. Perhaps something related to emergency preparedness, life-saving, other???
Please let me know your thoughts. This blog is designed for brainstorming so please dont be afraid to comment.

Planning a Daily Activity for Beacon Day Camp
Hi Folks,
Our team to date includes Stacey Brown, Penny and Bob Orme, Erik Nelson, Lou Donnarumma, Pastor Bob, my wife Amy and myself. We are being asked to plan an activity each day of the Beacon Day Camp being held this summer, July 21 through July 25.
Pastor Bob had asked that I research summer camp activities at three churches, information I've gathered so far is summarized below...
Saddleback Church - Lake Forest, CA
http://www.saddlebackfamily.com/allstars/index.html
The Saddleback Church sublink above will take you to some of the children's programming the church conducts. Saddleback's program for their 2008 summer camp is not yet available online. I've emailed the church and asked if they could forward last years program if available. Other content at the link above contains interesting programming we might borrow ideas from.
Orchard Hill Church - Wexford, PA
http://www.orchardhillchurch.com/files/admin/videos/promo-kidsfest.mov
Orchard Hill Church has a promotional video on their summer kidsfest linked above; the video is worth the five minute watch. They describe briefly in the video a water day, complete with a fire truck. Pastor Bob would love to see one of our activities include water, hopefully with a fire truck and water slides. They have photos available of their water day at

http://www.orchardhillchurch.com/photoskf07wk2b.asp
http://www.orchardhillchurch.com/photoskf07wk1b.asp.
I also liked Orchard Hill's idea of breaking the kids into smaller groups with volunteers assigned to the groups throughout the week. They use a ratio of 12 students to 2 volunteers. Their team celebration at the end of the week is also a good idea. All of Orchard Hill's activities appear to be scheduled for right after lunch. I could not find a specific program guide on their website either but have emailed a member of Orchard Hill's staff with a request.
North Point Community Church - Alpharetta, GA
http://www.upstreetkids.org/
North Point Community Church and North Point Ministries has a very organized weekly ministry for kids called UpStreet. They base their children's ministry on Luke 2:52, the curriculum is built around 1. Wisdom: I need to make the wise choice.2. Faith: I can trust God no matter what.3. Friendship: I should treat others the way I want to be treated.
http://www.xtremestudents.org/uploaded/files_northpoint/NPCC_schedule.pdf
North Point Community Church also has a boot camp with some interesting activities, albeit perhaps a bit messy. They apparently have a mud pit, prompting their note to parents to send their children with clothes they should not expect will return home. Hmmmm....
I have some other thoughts I will post separately. For now if you could explore some of the above links for ideas it would be much appreciated.

New! Beacon Day Camp...
Posted on behalf of the staff at Beacon Evangelical Free Church.
"Lord, how can we reach out and bless our community this summer?" That's been our prayer as a staff for the last month. Last week, the idea of hosting an inexpensive week of Day Camp started to fill us with excitement. We could truly bless both parents--especially working parents--and kids in our community! Please be praying with us as we seek the Lord's leading on this, and also about what role He might be calling you to play. Mark your calendars now for July 21 through 25--more details to come!
